The Ferocactus stainesii (also known as Mexican Fire Barrel) is a bold, sun-loving cactus known for its heavily ribbed barrel shape and striking reddish spines. Over time, it can grow into a large, columnar specimen and is perfect for collectors who love a bit of drama. This cactus thrives in bright light and dry conditions, making it a hardy addition to any xeric garden, cactus shelf, or sun-drenched windowsill.
Care Instructions
Light: Needs full sun to thrive. Outdoors, give it 6+ hours of direct sun. Indoors, place in your brightest window (south-facing preferred).
Water: Water only when the soil is bone dry. During winter, reduce watering to once every 4–6 weeks.
Humidity: Prefers arid conditions—no misting required.
Temperature: Hardy to approx. 25°F (-4°C) when dry. Best kept between 65–90°F (18–32°C). Bring indoors if prolonged frost is expected.
💡 Pro Tip: Use a deep, gritty cactus mix and a pot with drainage—this species dislikes having “wet feet.”
