The Neopoteria nidus is a captivating, slow-growing cactus prized for its intricate spination and refined structure. Native to South America, this rare species features a deep green to bluish body lined with pronounced ribs, each crowned by elegant clusters of fine, hairlike spines that give the plant its nest-like appearance—hence the name nidus, meaning “nest.”

As it matures, Neopoteria nidus can produce soft, woolly areoles and stunning funnel-shaped blooms in shades of pink or cream. Its compact, symmetrical form and balanced proportions make it a true centerpiece for collectors seeking uncommon, sculptural desert species.

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. Outdoors, full sun brings out its richest tones and densest spination. Indoors, provide a bright, unobstructed window or supplemental grow light.
Water: Water deeply when soil is fully dry. In winter, water sparingly or not at all to mimic natural dormancy.
Humidity: Prefers low humidity and excellent airflow. Do not mist.
Temperature: Maintain between 65–90°F (18–32°C). Protect from frost or prolonged cold exposure.
💡 Pro Tip: Use a gritty, mineral-rich cactus mix with added pumice or lava rock for ideal drainage. Neopoteria nidus thrives in tight pots and consistent sun exposure, which enhance both its color and spine density.
